“Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein

Title: Code Name Verity
Author: Elizabeth Wein
Publisher: Egmont Press
Year:  2012
Genre(s):  historical fiction, suspense
Part of a Series: Yes, #1
Rating:

Why I read it: It was highly recommended when it first came out and I finally got around to reading it last year, finishing it this year.

Summary: Two best friends fly into Nazi-occupied France during World War II in order to perform a reconnaissance mission with the French Resistance. When they suffer a crash landing, one dies and the other is taken prison by the Nazis. She is tortured on a daily basis and the only thing that spares her is the information she starts giving her captors in order to prolong her life. “I have told the truth” she writes—but has she?

Review: It’s really hard to write a summary of this story because you don’t want to give anything away! The plot twists and turns and there’s a surprise around every corner, one readers should absolutely take spoiler free.

Actually, it’s also hard to review it without giving away anything.

Wein bring her characters to life through Verity’s words—from Maddie to Queen to Engel. Strong women definitely drive this story forward on both sides, British and Nazi. Everyone is real and it’s almost easy to forget you’re reading a fictional novel rather than actual reports from the Second World War. Like From Sand and Ash, it recounts the atrocities people can inflict on other and it raised my blood pressure quite a few times while reading it.

This review is so frustrating because there’s so much I want to say about it…but I don’t want to give too much away. Perhaps that’s the best review I can give it. So go, read it and discover all the amazing reasons to love this book.

Bottom line: READ IT! READ IT NOW!
Sex: No.

Have you ever read a book where you couldn’t explain what was going on because you didn’t want to spoil anything?
